She Speaks: Prof Sade Ogunsola

It’s a New Year, New Hopes and aspirations, New Grace. Happy 2010 everyone.

I would like to introduce a monthly interview series to our blog. The interview series will be about special people in the non-profit world we move in. They touch us with their passion, their generosity and their strength.

Our first blog for the year is an interview with K’arale’s founder, the extra-and not ordinary Folasade Ogunsola!!

Folasade Ogunsola is a Professor of medical microbiology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Her education background includes an MB CHB and a Masters degree from the University of Lagos and a PHD from University of Wales. She is happily married to Segun Ogunsola and has 3 lovely children.

Re: The mess called Kuramo

This post is written in response to Gbenga Olatunji on his article on the Sunday Guardian[03/01/2010] about Kuramo. Kuramo the site of our first PortaKlinic is a community dear to K’arale. I do welcome responses on what can be done to improve life for its inhabitants. We also welcome the input of other NGOs interested in training the many jobless youth there to become economically empowered.

Dear Mr Olatunji,

I do agree with you; Kuramo, the most central and easily accessible beach in Lagos is a mess in its present state but before we condemn and destroy, we need to understand.

Dear Friends,

As 2009 draws to a close and we take stock of what matters most in our lives, we just want to say ‘Thank you’ for joining us in this mission to take quality healthcare to the hard-to-reach communities and thus giving poorer communities an opportunity to partake of quality healthcare.

K’arale began operation under its registered name in March 2009. Do note that prior to this in the past three years, various projects[mainly research] focused on Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS had been carried out by us funded by International donors like Bill and Melinda gates Foundation, PEPFAR and APIN.

Did you know that this year's WAD was the 21st anniversary since it's first observance on the 1st of December 1988 following a conference of health ministers from around the world? The World AIDS Day commemoration is about raising money for the fight, increasing awareness, fighting prejudices and improving education.
This year, 'Universal access and Human rights' was the theme for WAD and the slogans like
I AM ACCEPTED
I AM WELL
I AM SAFE
I AM GETTING TREATMENT were used to underscore the importance of awareness of human rights.

But these affirmations do sound bleak when compared with the latest reports from UNAIDS:
There are now 33.4m people living with HIV around

What is in a name?

A lot rests with the name of your nonprofit and even on what you name your projects and programs. Will your name become a household word? Will it convey quickly and eloquently what you do? Or will it be a meaningless acronym or stuffy lingo that only insiders to your field really understand?
